The CEPU took an important step today to help protect your wages and conditions: by submitting to Australia Post our Common Law Agreement.

“The Common Law Agreement will give you a crucial safety net, catching all the conditions that Australia Post wants to drop from your Awards and Agreements”

The aim is for the CLA to work alongside EBA7 – as an added layer of protection for members’ wages and conditions. Again, there are a number of reasons why we believe the CLA is critical:
· Australia Post used WorkChoices as an excuse to rip out many of your job conditions secured in EBA6 and other agreements;
· We don’t want you to lose these conditions – because once they go, they’re harder to get back;
· If Australia Post wants to make a variety of side promises about the matters cut out from EBA7, those management promises should put into a legal agreement;
· During the life of EBA7, improvements will be made to the Workplace Relations Act. In the meantime, we must maintain as many of your conditions now – to put you in a stronger bargaining position in the future.
The CLA aims to:
· Promote full-time employment in Australia Post;
· Protect allowances and leave conditions;
· Create enforceable understandings on contracting out, the use of agency staff, dedicated delivery and franchising.
Where to next?
We’ve called on Australia Post to meet by Friday 8 August 2008 to discuss the CLA and the need to improve the current EBA7.
Management must respect the wishes of our members to improve the range of protections and conditions available to employees at Australia Post – and Post needs to sit down with the unions and work out how to achieve this.
