It's as if Telstra's overzealous Big
Brother-type activity of retaining all employees' emails for seven years wasn't
enough of a slap in the face to employees.
The Union has recently received a number of complaints from members employed at Telstra claiming to have been directed by their team leaders to read their work emails during their own time after hours, rather than during paid working time.
Team leaders have claimed that this direction is due to performance driven pressure being applied to employees by senior management.
The CEPU advises all members that this is an illegal and unlawful direction by management and qualifies as unpaid overtime.
The CEPU advises all members to read work-related emails only during paid time.
If you are directed to cease reading work emails during paid time and are directed to read them during your own time, you should follow the steps below;
1. Request that the direction to read emails during personal time be given to you in writing.
2. Request that you be paid overtime for the time taken to read the emails outside of normal paid hours.
3. Forward a copy of any direction made in writing to the CEPU urgently to fax: (02) 9893 7396.
