The CEPU has condemned Telstra's latest
plans to cut 900 operations staff from
its workforce during the next financial
year.
Telstra's decision to slash jobs will
see approximately 1 in 16 skilled
employees removed from supplying quality
service to Telstra customers.
CEPU
NSW
Assistant Secretary Shane Murphy slammed
the future job cuts which the union
claims will severely impact on the level
and quality of service to customers.
The CEPU has long argued before a number
of public enquiries that continued job
cuts in Telstra has led to a major
deterioration in customer service
standards and this is backed by the
recent report from ACMA that Telstra had
received 58,597 complaints from
customers during the period July 2009 –
December 2009.
Currently the union has not received the
break up of numbers from Telstra on how
many will be going in NSW and from what
locations.
As soon as the CEPU has such information
members will be informed.
The exact timing of the intended job
cuts is not yet known by the CEPU other
than it will occur sometime in the next
financial year.
The CEPU needs information from members
to help fight to protect members jobs.
The information sought by the CEPU from
members is any Temporary cable locations
(including cable size and distance),
Plastic bagged or Plastic wrapped joints
location and size, Ring barked joint
locations. Further the CEPU also needs
specific information from members in
teams where Telstra has employed new
Telstra workers in the last 12 months or
teams that have Excelior trainees
performing work unsupervised or working
without the direct supervision of
another CT.
The information sought by the CEPU will
help the union challenge the validity of
any proposed redundancies when they
arise and will assist in mounting
possible legal challenges before Fair
Work Australia.
Any information given to the CEPU will
be treated with the strictest
confidence.
